Dear Mr Ashok Chavan,
Every society gives enough warning signals before turning totally anti democratic and fascist in nature. If we go back in history we will find that even in fascist Germany the first attack came on the freedom of expression of artists and intellectuals. It is very natural as the struggle for peace, democracy, secular thought, justice and communal harmony is waged by sensitive and creative people. The dream of an equal and just society has always been projected by either the mass movements of ordinary poor and marginalized people, secular political forces, human rights activists or has been portrayed by artists, poets, film makers, theatre directors etc. So those people whose agenda and preoccupation is to spread hatred and disharmony always attack the artists, activists, intellectuals and thinkers.
Unfortunately in the past we have ignored these danger signals and violent acts thus allowing the perpetrators of hate mongering not only to go scot free but also to further vitiate the atmosphere.
What has been happening in Maharashtra the past few months is absolutely shocking and is an attack on the democratic rights of the citizens of not only Maharashtra but all Indians.
I am writing to you as a member of the National Integration Council, Ministry of Home Affairs and I request you to immediately take steps to ensure that the goondaism unleashed by the Shiv Sena and MNS is stopped immediately.
I request you to ensure that Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan , whose effigies were burnt in Mumbai and especially Shahrukh Khan, who has received threats in the past few days, are given adequate security, that there is no disturbance when their films are released or screened in theaters. I request you to ensure that no taxi driver or auto rickshaw driver is harassed for not knowing or speaking Marathi (its good that you backtracked on January 20 from a similar unconstitutional stand on the question of issuing licenses to the taxi drivers) and that their constitutional and democratic rights of working or living in any part of India are not violated by Shiv Sena hoodlums on the roads.
The kind of filthy language which is being used and threats which are being issued against the senior leaders of your own party are absolutely unacceptable and need to be condemned strongly.
I request you to urgently arrest and prosecute those who are behind the recent incidents.

മലയാള മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ മത-ജാതി വിവേചനം
ഇന്നലെ കിട്ടിയ ഒരു ഇ-മെയില്‍
2005 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ ഒമ്പതിന് കളമശേãരിയില്‍ തമിഴ്നാട് സര്‍ക്കാറിന്റെ ബസ് കത്തിച്ച കേസില്‍ ആരോപണവിധേയയായ സൂഫിയ മഅ്ദനിയുടെ മുന്‍കൂര്‍ ജാമ്യാപേക്ഷ ഹൈക്കോടതിയില്‍ വാദം കേള്‍ക്കുന്നതിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ എഴുതിപ്പിടിപ്പിച്ച പേടിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന വാര്‍ത്തകളെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഉത്കണ്ഠാകുലരായ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ചില പൌരന്മാര്‍ 2009 ഡിസംബര്‍ 18 ന് ഒരു പ്രസ്താവന പുറത്തിറക്കി. നിയമനടപടികളെയും നിയമസംവിധാനങ്ങളെയും പരിഗണിക്കാതെ ചില മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ സൂഫിയയെ കുറ്റവാളിയായി വിധിച്ചു. മത^ജാതി ന്യൂനപക്ഷങ്ങളെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെയും വിഷയങ്ങളെയും കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളും പൊതുസമൂഹവും ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്ന രീതി അസ്വസ്ഥപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന പുതിയ പ്രവണതകളുടെ ഭാഗമായി മാത്രമേ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനാവൂ.
സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ സമുദായസൌഹാര്‍ദങ്ങളെ നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ പ്രവണത, പൌരനെ അടിസ്ഥാന വിചാരണക്ക് വിധേയമാകുന്നതില്‍നിന്നു പോലും തടയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. ഭരണഘടന വിഭാവന ചെയ്യുന്ന മൌലികാവകാശങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പുറമെ ജാതി മത ഭേദമെന്യേ എല്ലാ പൌരന്മാര്‍ക്കുമുള്ള അഭിപ്രായ^ആവിഷ്കാര സ്വാതന്ത്യ്രങ്ങളെയും പ്രയോഗവത്കരണങ്ങളെയും ഇത് നിരുത്സാഹപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഈയൊരു സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ചില മാധ്യമ പ്രചാരണങ്ങളെയും പ്രത്യേക മത^ജാതികള്‍ക്കു നേരെയുള്ള മുന്‍വിധികളെയും ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.
'ലൌജിഹാദ്' വിഷയത്തില്‍ മുസ്ലിം ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനും ഹിന്ദു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയും തമ്മില്‍ നടന്ന രണ്ട് കേസുകളാണ് മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും വ്യാപകമായി പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തത്. രണ്ട് കേസുകളിലും ഹിന്ദു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയും മുസ്ലിം പുരുഷനും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയവും അതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന വിവാഹവുമാണുണ്ടായത്. ഇതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഹിന്ദു^ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദി'നിരയായി ഇസ്ലാം മതം സ്വീകരിച്ചെതെന്ന് ആവേശത്തോടെ അച്ചടിച്ചത്. ഇത്തരം അടിസ്ഥാന രഹിതമായ വാര്‍ത്തകളാണ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് കെ.ടി ശങ്കരന്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' നടക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പൊലീസ് അന്വേഷണം വേണമെന്നും പ്രസ്താവിക്കാന്‍ ഇടയാക്കിയത്. സ്ത്രീകള്‍ സ്വന്തമായി തീരുമാനങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിവില്ലാത്തവരാണെന്നും മുസ്ലിം ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ മുഴുവനും 'ലൌ ജിഹാദി'ന്റെ ഉപകരണങ്ങളാണെന്നും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ സമര്‍ഥമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചു, ശരിയായ പൊലീസ് അന്വേഷണങ്ങള്‍ അപ്പോഴും നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' കേരളത്തില്‍ ആസൂത്രിതമായി നടന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് പ്രസ്താവിച്ചപ്പോഴും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പ്രചാരണങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയില്ല. അവസാനം കോടതി തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു, കേരളത്തില്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' നടന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്ന്.
വര്‍ക്കലയില്‍ ഒരു മധ്യവയസ്കന്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പുതിയൊരു സംജ്ഞയുമായി കടന്നുവന്നു. അതാണ് 'ദലിത് തീവ്രവാദം'. ഇവിടെയും പൊലീസ് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് അതേപടി പകര്‍ത്തുകയാണ് മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തത്. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പൊലീസിന്റെ ഭാഷ്യമനുസരിച്ചാണ് ദലിത് സംഘടനകളെ തീവ്രവാദികളാക്കിയത്. പൊലീസും മാധ്യമങ്ങളും ഒന്നു ചേര്‍ന്ന് 'ദലിത് ഭീകരസംഘടന'കളെക്കുറിച്ച് വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ഉല്‍പാദിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ദലിത് സംഘടനയുടെ മേലുള്ള പൊലീസിന്റെ അന്യായമായ കുറ്റം ചാര്‍ത്തലുകളും ശിവസേനക്കാരുടെ ആക്രമണങ്ങളും ന്യായീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഈ അതിക്രമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കൂട്ടുനില്‍ക്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. പൊലീസിനൊപ്പം ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഈ സംഘടനയെ അവര്‍ കുറ്റവാളികളാക്കി മുദ്രകുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ചരിത്രപരമായ കാരണങ്ങളാല്‍ പാര്‍ശ്വവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ജനതയെക്കുറിച്ച മുന്‍വിധികള്‍ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കുകയും പൊലീസ് അതിക്രമങ്ങളെ തടയുന്നതിന് പകരം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
2009 മെയ് പതിനേഴിന് ബീമാപ്പള്ളിയില്‍ പൊലീസ് വെടിവെച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് മല്‍സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികളായ ആറ് മുസ്ലിംകള്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും 47 പേര്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേല്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അതില്‍ തന്നെ 27 പേര്‍ക്ക് വെടിയേറ്റാണ് പരിക്ക് പറ്റിയത്. പിന്നീട് മനുഷ്യാവകാശ സംഘടനകള്‍ നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തില്‍ 'അനീതി നിറഞ്ഞതും അങ്ങേയറ്റം ക്രിമിനല്‍ സ്വഭാവമുള്ളതുമായ അക്രമ'മാണ് പൊലീസ് നടത്തിയതെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി. സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ചില പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ അന്വേഷണ വിധേയമായി സസ്പെന്‍ഡു ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. മിക്ക മലയാളം മാധ്യമങ്ങളും ഈ പ്രശ്നത്തില്‍ മൌനം പാലിക്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്തവര്‍ പൊലീസ് ഭാഷ്യമനുസരിച്ച് ഇതിനെ വെറും 'വര്‍ഗീയ അസ്വാരസ്യ'മായാണ് ചിത്രീകരിച്ചത്. വര്‍ഗീയവത്കരിച്ച ജനക്കൂട്ടത്തെ പിരിച്ചുവിടാനാണു പൊലീസ് വെടിവെച്ചതെന്നു പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ച മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ അതിനാല്‍ മൌനം പാലിക്കുകയാണ് നല്ലതെന്നു പറയാനാണ് ശ്രമിച്ചത്. ഇതൊരിക്കലും സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ നിജസ്ഥിതി തുറന്നു കാട്ടുന്നതായിരുന്നില്ല. മുസ്ലിം മല്‍സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ക്കെതിരായ അങ്ങേയറ്റം അപലപിക്കേണ്ട ഭരണകൂട ഭീകരതയെക്കുറിച്ച ഒരു അന്വേഷണവും നടന്നില്ല. അങ്ങനെ ഈ സംഭവം മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ അവഗണിക്കുകയും പൊതുജന ശ്രദ്ധ ലഭിക്കാതെ പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇതു മുഴുവന്‍ കാണിക്കുന്നത് മലയാള മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ മത^ജാതി ന്യൂനപക്ഷങ്ങളോട് കാണിക്കുന്ന വിവേചനത്തെയാണ്. മുസ്ലിംകളെക്കുറിച്ച ഏതൊരു പ്രശ്നവും എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ വര്‍ഗീയവത്കരിക്കാനും അവരെക്കുറിച്ച സംശയവും വെറുപ്പും ഉല്‍പാദിപ്പിക്കാനും വളരെ വേഗം സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സാമാന്യമായി ജാതിപ്രശ്നങ്ങളെ തെറ്റായ രീതിയില്‍ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യാനും അവരെ കുറിച്ച മുന്‍വിധികള്‍ ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കാനും ഇത്തരം പ്രചാരണങ്ങള്‍ സഹായകമാവുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഏതെങ്കിലും സംഘടനയെയോ വ്യക്തികളെയോ പക്ഷം പിടിക്കുന്നില്ല. നീതി പുലരണമെന്നു മാത്രമാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പറയാനുള്ളത്. മേല്‍ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച ഏത് പ്രശ്നത്തിലും കൃത്യമായ അന്വേഷണവും വിചാരണയും നടക്കണം. അതോടൊപ്പം ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ജാതിയിലും മതത്തിലും ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടെന്നു കരുതി അവര്‍ക്ക് നീതിയും ഭരണഘടനപരമായ അവകാശങ്ങളും നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകൂടാ. അവരെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ അനുവദിക്കുകയില്ല. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ തങ്ങളില്‍ അര്‍പ്പിതമായ കര്‍ത്തവ്യങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിക്കണം. ജനാധിപത്യ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ മുറുകെപ്പിടിക്കണം. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭരണഘടന ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന ബഹുസ്വരതയുടെ പാഠങ്ങള്‍ നമ്മുടെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ നിരന്തരം ഓര്‍മിക്കണം

'ലൌജിഹാദ്' വിഷയത്തില്‍ മുസ്ലിം ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനും ഹിന്ദു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയും തമ്മില്‍ നടന്ന രണ്ട് കേസുകളാണ് മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും വ്യാപകമായി പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തത്. രണ്ട് കേസുകളിലും ഹിന്ദു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയും മുസ്ലിം പുരുഷനും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയവും അതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന വിവാഹവുമാണുണ്ടായത്. ഇതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഹിന്ദു^ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദി'നിരയായി ഇസ്ലാം മതം സ്വീകരിച്ചെതെന്ന് ആവേശത്തോടെ അച്ചടിച്ചത്. ഇത്തരം അടിസ്ഥാന രഹിതമായ വാര്‍ത്തകളാണ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് കെ.ടി ശങ്കരന്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' നടക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പൊലീസ് അന്വേഷണം വേണമെന്നും പ്രസ്താവിക്കാന്‍ ഇടയാക്കിയത്. സ്ത്രീകള്‍ സ്വന്തമായി തീരുമാനങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിവില്ലാത്തവരാണെന്നും മുസ്ലിം ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ മുഴുവനും 'ലൌ ജിഹാദി'ന്റെ ഉപകരണങ്ങളാണെന്നും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ സമര്‍ഥമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചു, ശരിയായ പൊലീസ് അന്വേഷണങ്ങള്‍ അപ്പോഴും നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' കേരളത്തില്‍ ആസൂത്രിതമായി നടന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് പ്രസ്താവിച്ചപ്പോഴും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പ്രചാരണങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയില്ല. അവസാനം കോടതി തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു, കേരളത്തില്‍ 'ലൌ ജിഹാദ്' നടന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്ന്.
വര്‍ക്കലയില്‍ ഒരു മധ്യവയസ്കന്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പുതിയൊരു സംജ്ഞയുമായി കടന്നുവന്നു. അതാണ് 'ദലിത് തീവ്രവാദം'. ഇവിടെയും പൊലീസ് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് അതേപടി പകര്‍ത്തുകയാണ് മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തത്. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ പൊലീസിന്റെ ഭാഷ്യമനുസരിച്ചാണ് ദലിത് സംഘടനകളെ തീവ്രവാദികളാക്കിയത്. പൊലീസും മാധ്യമങ്ങളും ഒന്നു ചേര്‍ന്ന് 'ദലിത് ഭീകരസംഘടന'കളെക്കുറിച്ച് വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ഉല്‍പാദിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ദലിത് സംഘടനയുടെ മേലുള്ള പൊലീസിന്റെ അന്യായമായ കുറ്റം ചാര്‍ത്തലുകളും ശിവസേനക്കാരുടെ ആക്രമണങ്ങളും ന്യായീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കേരളത്തിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഈ അതിക്രമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കൂട്ടുനില്‍ക്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. പൊലീസിനൊപ്പം ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഈ സംഘടനയെ അവര്‍ കുറ്റവാളികളാക്കി മുദ്രകുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ചരിത്രപരമായ കാരണങ്ങളാല്‍ പാര്‍ശ്വവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ജനതയെക്കുറിച്ച മുന്‍വിധികള്‍ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കുകയും പൊലീസ് അതിക്രമങ്ങളെ തടയുന്നതിന് പകരം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
2009 മെയ് പതിനേഴിന് ബീമാപ്പള്ളിയില്‍ പൊലീസ് വെടിവെച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് മല്‍സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികളായ ആറ് മുസ്ലിംകള്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും 47 പേര്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേല്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അതില്‍ തന്നെ 27 പേര്‍ക്ക് വെടിയേറ്റാണ് പരിക്ക് പറ്റിയത്. പിന്നീട് മനുഷ്യാവകാശ സംഘടനകള്‍ നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തില്‍ 'അനീതി നിറഞ്ഞതും അങ്ങേയറ്റം ക്രിമിനല്‍ സ്വഭാവമുള്ളതുമായ അക്രമ'മാണ് പൊലീസ് നടത്തിയതെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി. സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ചില പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ അന്വേഷണ വിധേയമായി സസ്പെന്‍ഡു ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. മിക്ക മലയാളം മാധ്യമങ്ങളും ഈ പ്രശ്നത്തില്‍ മൌനം പാലിക്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്തവര്‍ പൊലീസ് ഭാഷ്യമനുസരിച്ച് ഇതിനെ വെറും 'വര്‍ഗീയ അസ്വാരസ്യ'മായാണ് ചിത്രീകരിച്ചത്. വര്‍ഗീയവത്കരിച്ച ജനക്കൂട്ടത്തെ പിരിച്ചുവിടാനാണു പൊലീസ് വെടിവെച്ചതെന്നു പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ച മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ അതിനാല്‍ മൌനം പാലിക്കുകയാണ് നല്ലതെന്നു പറയാനാണ് ശ്രമിച്ചത്. ഇതൊരിക്കലും സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ നിജസ്ഥിതി തുറന്നു കാട്ടുന്നതായിരുന്നില്ല. മുസ്ലിം മല്‍സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ക്കെതിരായ അങ്ങേയറ്റം അപലപിക്കേണ്ട ഭരണകൂട ഭീകരതയെക്കുറിച്ച ഒരു അന്വേഷണവും നടന്നില്ല. അങ്ങനെ ഈ സംഭവം മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ അവഗണിക്കുകയും പൊതുജന ശ്രദ്ധ ലഭിക്കാതെ പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇതു മുഴുവന്‍ കാണിക്കുന്നത് മലയാള മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ മത^ജാതി ന്യൂനപക്ഷങ്ങളോട് കാണിക്കുന്ന വിവേചനത്തെയാണ്. മുസ്ലിംകളെക്കുറിച്ച ഏതൊരു പ്രശ്നവും എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ വര്‍ഗീയവത്കരിക്കാനും അവരെക്കുറിച്ച സംശയവും വെറുപ്പും ഉല്‍പാദിപ്പിക്കാനും വളരെ വേഗം സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സാമാന്യമായി ജാതിപ്രശ്നങ്ങളെ തെറ്റായ രീതിയില്‍ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യാനും അവരെ കുറിച്ച മുന്‍വിധികള്‍ ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കാനും ഇത്തരം പ്രചാരണങ്ങള്‍ സഹായകമാവുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഏതെങ്കിലും സംഘടനയെയോ വ്യക്തികളെയോ പക്ഷം പിടിക്കുന്നില്ല. നീതി പുലരണമെന്നു മാത്രമാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പറയാനുള്ളത്. മേല്‍ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച ഏത് പ്രശ്നത്തിലും കൃത്യമായ അന്വേഷണവും വിചാരണയും നടക്കണം. അതോടൊപ്പം ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ജാതിയിലും മതത്തിലും ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടെന്നു കരുതി അവര്‍ക്ക് നീതിയും ഭരണഘടനപരമായ അവകാശങ്ങളും നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകൂടാ. അവരെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ അനുവദിക്കുകയില്ല. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ തങ്ങളില്‍ അര്‍പ്പിതമായ കര്‍ത്തവ്യങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിക്കണം. ജനാധിപത്യ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ മുറുകെപ്പിടിക്കണം. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭരണഘടന ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന ബഹുസ്വരതയുടെ പാഠങ്ങള്‍ നമ്മുടെ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ നിരന്തരം ഓര്‍മിക്കണം

Citizens voice concern over media's Soofiya Madani hunt
The following is a statement issued by a group of concerned citizens on Thursday
We, a group of concerned citizens from different walks of life, have come to know that the Kerala police has chargesheeted Soofiya Madani for her alleged involvement in the 2005 Kalamassery bus burning case. We do not want to take a position for or against Soofiya Madanai and we believe that the rule of the law and the constitution of India should prevail.
However, during the past few years we have seen a number of activists, students, scholars and other citizens from the Muslim community being imprisoned and persecuted in the name of combating terrorism. After long years in prison, many of them have been acquitted, free of all charges, by the higher courts. In the meantime most of them have been subjected to all kinds of violations of their fundamental rights. The media has also played a huge role in subverting the judicial process by sensationalizing these cases and publishing baseless stories without any proper investigation.
Soofiya Madani started appearing in news media in the context of the 10 year long imprisonment of her husband Abdul Nasser Madani without a trial. During this period, Soofiya was active in the affairs of the political outfit Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that her husband had founded. Abdul Nassar Madani was finally acquitted after this long incarceration without even as much as a whimper of apology, forget compensation. Following his acquittal, both Abdul Nasser and Soofiya Madani have been active in the electoral politics of Kerala, contesting the last Parliamentary elections along with the ruling Left Democratic Front. One of the cases against Soofiya Madani is that she was allegedly involved in conspiring the burning of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus at Kalamassery, Kochi in September 2005 - and an anticipatory bail plea on this case is pending before the Kerala High Court today.
However the media in Kerala has been extra-judicially trying Soofiya Madani -- often using highly questionable anti-Muslim representations -- equating a case of arson where her involvement has not been legally established yet -- to fundamentalist terrorism. This media campaign also needs to be seen in the context of a prevalent anti-Muslim rhetoric in the Malayalam language media in general.
In that context we fear that her basic constitutional rights might be violated in the coming days. We want to raise our collective voices against such an event and we strongly call on all concerned authorities to prevent any such violation from happening without prejudice to the Rule of Law and any investigations that should be carried out against her.
